Local members of congress are working with their leaders on Capitol Hill, hoping to deliver the economic stimulus package to President Obama by next Monday, which is Presidents’ Day.
Back in their local congressional districts, Chaka Fattah and Allyson Schwartz say it's a priority:
Fattah: "The one thing we can't do is do nothing."
Schwartz: "and we're going to be in conference committee, to work out small differences between the house and senate. We will get this done."
Schwartz says it's really a three pronged approach:
"To help provide relief for families and businesses, to stimulate and create jobs quickly, and to make serious investments for the future so we can be economically competitive."
Fattah notes the price tag is roughly the same, but the house and senate have different views on spending and tax cuts:
"90-percent of the bills are identical, and we will work through the differences."
Fattah says action is needed now. Government data shows since the recession began in December 2007, 3.6 million jobs have been lost. Half of those cuts happened in the last three months.
